Vermont Yankee to Shut Down in 2014

Aug
27

Entergy Corp announced today that they will be shutting down the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant at the end of 2014. The inability for nuclear power to prove financially viable was the leading cause of the shutdown, according to Bill Mohl, Entergy's wholesale commodities president. Despite the economic challenges the plant was facing, grassroots activists, the State of Vermont, and Governor Peter Shumlin have all been applying political and legal pressure on the company to shut down the plant.

EDF Pulls out of US Nuclear Business

Aug
06

French energy firm EDF (Electricite de France) announced on July 30th that they were pulling out of the U.S. Nuclear market. EDF, the worlds' largest nuclear power producer, cited the sharp decrease in the price of shale gas in the U.S. as the reason for their withdrawal. EDF will sell it's 49.99% share in the Constellation Energy Nuclear Group to Exelon for fair market value between January 2016 and June 2022. This will bring an end to the $4.5 billion deal made in 2009 between EDF and Constellation Energy (which was purchased by Exelon in 2012).

Calvert Cliffs Shut Down Again

May
23

Unit 2, one of the 2 reactors at the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Southern Maryland, was unexpectedly shut down again on Tuesday May 21 around 5:30 am. Neil Sheehan, a spokesperson for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), said that the reactor was manually taken off line because of high vibrations in the steam line. A failed coupling between the pump and the pump motor was the leading cause of these vibrations.
